Futuristic & Hyper-scale Data Center GAK Sejong in Full Operation

-After the opening ceremony on November 6th, the center will serve as a place to share resources and realize state-of-the-art technologies such as AI-

Resource sharing using big data, AI, robotics, and self-driving technology will materialize at GAK Sejong, a world-class and hyperscale data center.

On November 6th, in Jiphyeon-dong, Sejong City Mayor Choi Min-ho, Naver CEO Choi Su-hyun, and Naver Cloud CEO Kim Yu-won gathered to celebrate the opening ceremony alongside 80 other participants.

On that day, CEO Choi Su-hyun delivered the opening remarks, followed by an opening ceremony video, the Naver directors' welcoming and gratitude remarks, foreign guests' congratulatory remarks, and a tour of the GAK Sejong.

GAK Sejong was scheduled for the establishment in Sejong-si when the city was selected during the location bidding for Naver’s second data center in 2019.

Following processes such as signing contracts to move into industrial complexes in 2020, site development, architectural review, and permits, construction commenced in February 2021. After a construction period of approximately 2 years and 6 months, the building was finally approved for use in August this year.

Throughout this period, the city formed a support organization to aid in the data center’s construction in collaboration with agencies like the National Agency for Administrative City Construction and the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH). The support organization aimed to streamline administrative procedures and expedite construction.

The newly opened Gak Sejong features four buildings, including server buildings and operation buildings each with 4 above-ground floors and 3 basement levels, covering a total area of 293,697 square meters.

Notably, Gak Sejong is built to withstand a magnitude 7.0 earthquake and has a maximum server capacity of up to 600,000 units.

Gak Sejong is expected to serve as a state-of-the-art, hyperscale data center that goes far beyond just being a data storage facility. It will support resource sharing, 5G networks, robotics, artificial intelligence, big data, and other technologies, leveraging Naver's capabilities.

Mayor Choi Min-ho commented, “Sejong City is growing as the center of national strategic industries such as quantum technology and information security. Thus, the presence of Gak Sejong, a world-class data center in our community is not coincidental but necessary.” He added, “I hope that Gak Sejong, alongside Naver's vision of connecting the past, present, and future through digital innovation, will thrive in Sejong City, our future strategic capital.
